P 3 Change of Job 1

Change of Job 1

Leaving my first job at MALCO and joining M/S Taylor Instrument Co (I) Pvt.Ltd is itself a freak incident! Even after 45 years I am not able to understand what has happened on that eventful day.
In Aug.'70, while working at Mettur, I came to Madras(now Chennai) to meet my parents. On a working day, when I was planning to go to British Council Library at Mount Road, my class mate Mr Ragothamachar dropped at my house and expressed that he has been called for a job interview at Taylors and the interview is at Raji buildings in Mount Road.  I asked him to wait for few minutes to finish my lunch and then I accompanied him to Mount Road.

When he went in for interview, I waited for him by sitting in that office reception sofa. Then one of Taylor Sr.Engineer Mr LC Venkatrangan, also our college senior by 2 years, met me , enquired about me. I responded that I am working at Mettur and came to Madras on brief holidays. He initiated the dialogue by asking why not you also attend the interview at Taylors. I hesitated that I should not compete with Ragoth and I was in casual attire as well as do not have any document credential in hand. But some how he over powered me and went to manager Mr RD Sharma and told about me.
RDS interviewed me also and I was selected and not Ragoth. Though I felt bad for Ragoth, that selection was a big jump for me- Twice the amount from what I was drawing at Mettur. The job was at Madras as Sales&Service Engineer. In next coverage,I shall address my deputation to FACT Ambalamedu construction site and how it has completely altered my career path.

P 2 Career Progression

P 2

Would like to share memorable events/incidents in my career span

It so happens that though I have changed eight jobs before joining Reliance in 1987, none of my change or even first job were against advertisement or job application then formal interview etc.
Every time some one or other come across and refer my name to employers and I am called to join.
If I think of my first job joining at MALCO Mettur Dam,46 years ago, still I feel funny.
During those days there was no campus interview; the companies contact the institute and ask the students to attend interview in their factories. So in Oct.'69, 6 of our classmates were called by M/S Chemplast at Mettur. During the interview in the morning, the interviewing officer who happened to be our college senior said that the neighbouring company M/S MALCO is also looking for an Instrument engineer. Some of us went there in the afternoon to call on Malco senior manager, Mr KS
Jayaraman. I got selected in both the companies- M/S Chemplast with Rs350PM + accomodation but under 5 year bond to be executed,M/S Malco with only Rs 300PM+accommodation but NO bond. Typical of Ramanathan's character of not ready to serve any bond,I opted for Malco and joined as Asst.Maintenance engineer.
There I enjoyed my job and well respected by my team. Here one memorable incident which I cannot forget in life. On one evening about 8.30PM, call out came to me since my two foremanM/S Nallathambhi and Menon were not available in township. That was non functioning of Temperature Indicating Controller in Red Alumina Autoclave, which decide the cycle change over sequence.
As I was new and not having practical touch in handling challenging situations, I tried my best with available hand tools; during that attempts,by mistake I unscrewed a coupling and mercury came into hands. Instead of solving the emergency I landed into mess. By that time Mr Nallathambhi and one technician  Mr.Kathirvelu joined me.They rescued me from the situation by bringing spare instrument from the shop and changed, Later it was found that there was fundamental design error in the failed instrument and it was sent back to manufacturer at Calcutta.                               To be Contd.
